SDCC 10: G.I. Joe Renegades Footage Screened
We get a look at the new animated series.
US, July 22, 2010

by Eric Goldman

At Comic-Con today, a panel was held for the upcoming animated series GI Joe Renegades, which will be the latest incarnation of the ever-successful toy/multimedia line.

The storyline was described as a "Year 1" type scenario, showing a group of grunts recruited by a "spook" (Spook significa agente CIA) named Scarlett, to take down a seemingly benevolent pharmaceutical company, Cobra, who is hiding a very dark agenda. There are shades of The A-Team in the set up, as the proto-Joes are framed for a crime they didn't commit and go on the run – while attempting to take down Cobra.

Images were shown of characters from the series and they included Hawk (here called General Abernathy), Duke, the aforementioned Scarlett, Roadblock, Ripcord, Flint, Lady Jaye, Snake-Eyes, Tunnel Rat, Cobra Commander, Duke, Baroness, Dr. Mindbender and Storm Shadow. It was noted that as these characters are just getting started, many of them would not yet have their familiar code names when we first meet them.

Many of the characters were wearing outfits that certainly were reminiscent of their original uniforms from the 1980s, but a couple had notably different looks. General Abernathy had both an eye patch and a cane, while Dr. Mindbender was completely overhauled – looking like a normal, brown haired man in a doctor's lab coat, rather than the bald, monocled, bare-chested, caped villain from the past. Destro seemed influenced by the movie incarnation of the character, wearing a suit, along with his battle mask. It was difficult to get a prolonged look at Cobra Commander, but he had a very odd, small mask that was clearly not in line with either the hood or helmet from the 1980s, and – rather disappointingly – also may be influenced by the movie's rather ridiculed Commander look.

There were two images of Baroness shown and in one she had no glasses and in the other was wearing a visor/sunglasses type of eye-wear, again like in the movie. A very funny moment during the panel involved a woman in a great classic Baroness costume (and using an accent like the 1980s animated Baroness) ask, "Why do my glasses keep getting replaced by sunglasses?" It was promised that Baroness would at some points of the show wear traditional glasses, and that they would be, "The most kick butt glasses you can imagine," which "Serve a function beyond just helping her see."

A very quick montage of footage was shown, the highlight of which were two action scenes with Snake-Eyes. In one, Snake-Eyes is seen fighting an odd blue creature, with translucent skin, which he slices in half – it's possible that creature is technology based, as the show will feature Cobra using technology that is "ten, fifteen, twenty years ahead" of the norm. Another scene had Snake-Eyes fighting a large group of men with batons, which he uses to defeat one after another in quick succession – leaving one guy left, as the screen goes black and we hear the man yell, "No, no, no!" and the sounds of Snake-Eyes taking him down.

As to other characters who might show up, it was mentioned that the Dreadnoks will eventually appear, answering the question, "How did a biker group like the Dreadnoks get associated with a group like Cobra?" The show's creators noted that they wanted to use any opportunity to integrate classic Joe characters, using Carl Greer (Code Name: Doc, of course) as an example of someone who may pop up in their pre-G.I. Joe days.

G.I. Joe Renegades will air on The Hub, a new channel debuting this fall from Hasbro and Discovery. It was stressed that The Hub is a channel aimed at a young audience, so don't look for the content in Renegades to match the much more adult aimed G.I. Joe Resolute. That being said, the show will attempt to have a lot of intensity and action, which include the consequences of those events – As an example, it was said that if a character is injured in one episode, we'll see them still injured in the next episode.

The Hub launches on 10/10/10, and G.I. Joe Renegades' debut date will be announced down the line.
